Being one of the most important roles in the Avatar - The Last Airbender, fans grew to love the character of Katara (which was played by Mae Whitman). She presented herself as a motherly figure to Team Avatar as well as a great friend and "crush" (later to become girlfriend) to Aang.



Many inside sources claim that Mae Whitman might return for future roles in Book 2 of Legend of Korra (Air), whether large or diminutive. Note, this has not been confirmed yet, but there is a high possibility of this happening.


Here is what she replied when was asked about her possible contribution to Legend of Korra.

I’d say, definitely. Those guys are all my friends. We’re cut from the same cloth, and I’m obviously a huge fan of that as well. I love that the fans are so passionate about it. And going to Comic-Con and seeing people dressed up as Katara just makes me so happy. I’m also glad there’s a new story to follow. I know it probably wouldn’t be Katara, but if there was any way I could be a part of that — and I think it’s on their radar that I’m really passionate about all their projects — I wouldn’t be surprised if I somehow weaseled my way onto that show as well.

I also believe that if Mae Whitman were to be assigned a part in Book 2, it will most likely be a protagonist role. After all, listening to that sweet and familiar voice for 3 seasons has will definitely not sound right if Mae Whitman were to take an antagonist role, as opposed to the protagonist one.

This case is similar to Grey DeLisle's (voice of Azula), who will also be returning in Book 2 of Legend of Korra (confirmed). As she was one of the main antagonists in Avatar, she will also be representing the role of an antagonist (The Dark Spirit) in the future books/seasons.
